Chelyabinsk Sights

The Kirovka Pedestrian Street (The Arbat Street of Chelabinsk)

It is one of the most popular sights of Chelyabinsk. It is some kind of the citys landmark, the favorite place of walks of citizens and one of the oldest streets of Chelyabinsk. Beautiful merchant houses of 19-20th century of remain and can still be seen here. It used to be the Ufa way here and now this street became a pedestrian one.

The idea of creating the Arbat in Chelyabinsk arose in 2000.

Now the Kirovka is decorated by numerous bronze sculptures in ull-scale and other very interesting monuments. A number of cafes, stores and boutiques are located here.

The pedestrian part of the Street begins from the Revolution Square. Here, at the entrance of the Chelyabinsk Arbat, a beautiful arch was established. It is a copy of earlier existing arch welcoming city visitors a century ago.

While having a walk down the Kirovka, you can see the sculptures representing a saxophonist, a cleaner of footwear, a beggar, a war veteran sitting on one of the benches, an artist and even the Levsha (a craftmaster) with the shoed flea. There is also a reflection of the coat of arms of Chelyabinsk a boy with a camel sits on the Kirovka way.

In the center of the street the highest building of Chelyabinsk, the 23-floor business center The Chelyabinsk City of 111 meters high (including the spire), rises.

The Kirovka ends with a beautiful stele dedicated to city founders. The sculptural composition consists of four figures standing back to back: a Cossack with a pear, a Bashkir, a peasant with a saw and the officer Tevkelev, the founder of the fortress. The monument is crowned a spire with the figure of Saint Mikhail, the Archangel. On the sides of the stele there are excerpts from archival documents containing statements about significant events in life of the first settlers of Chelyabinsk.

The Chelyabinsk Arbat became so loved by the citizens that there was a musical Kirovka shown in the theater, which became popular right away. The plot of the musical is based on the myth that once in a year the bronze sculptures standing on the Kirovka become alive for one hour.

The Chelyabinsk Arbat is located downtown, in five minute walk from the Markstadt hotel.

The Scarlet Field (Aloye Poleh) Park

One of the most beloved leisure spots of the citizens, having more than centenary history of its existence.

In the 80th of the 19th century instead of the park there was the Fairground. In the center of the square there was a chapel where church services in memory of the Great Russian commander Alexander Nevsky were conducted. And when in 1907 the construction of Alexandro-Nevsky Church began (in honor of Emperor Alexander II), the square received the name Alexandrovsky.

Occurrence of the name The Scarlet Field is connected with events of the first Russian revolution. In the fall of 1905 a demonstration of the Chelyabinsk workers took place and was suppressed here. In memory of the bloody events the name The Scarlet Field appeared.

Then the square was renamed into the square of Comrade Lenin, and the monument of the leader was established.

Later in The Scarlet Field the children's park was open, the Palace of Pioneers constructed, a planetarium open, the sculpture The Eaglet (Orlyonok) established. The name The Scarlet Field was returned to the park.

For the 250 anniversary of Chelyabinsk the memorial was open for pioneer heroes. 12 bronze portraits of pioneers were placed on 12 pedestals lined with granite. On the bottom blocks of the pedestals embossed images of pioneer badges and moire ribbons with names of the heroes are fastened.

In the years of perestroyka The Scarlet Field became a venue of mass political meetings.

Today The Scarlet Field is a traditional place for walks of newlyweds and informal communication of the youth.

The Scarlet Field park is located within the walking distance from the Markstadt hotel. On the left side.
